CFS 2022 Grand Finals Comes to a Grand Finale with Baisha Gaming of Ch… 2023-01-02
■ First title in international competition for Baisha Gaming of China, and perfect conclusion as the team redeems itself after finishing second place last year
■ All Gamers fall short of winning back-to-back championships, while Vietnam’s CELEBe.2L continues to improve with third place finish
The second place winners from last year have redeemed themselves at last. The championship trophy at the CFS 2022 Grand Finals went to Baisha Gaming of China after the team narrowly finished second place last year.
On December 12 (Mon), Smilegate Entertainment (CEO Ina Jang) announced the results of the matches to determine the first place and third place winners of the CFS 2022 Grand Finals, which begun on December 2 (Fri) at Jeju-do in Korea, as the tournament came to a conclusion after ten days.
The CFS 2022 Grand Finals was the 11th annual event and featured 12 teams selected through preliminary matches held across four regions: China, EU-MENA, Brazil, and Southeast Asia. After the group stages and semifinals, the finals featured All Gamers and Baisha Gaming from China and the third-place match featured CELEBe.2L of Vietnam and Imperial of Brazil.
In the third-place match of the CFS 2022 Grand Finals, CELEBe.2L of Vietnam and Imperial of Brazil engaged in a fierce competition for the higher-place finish to the tournament. The teams were evenly matched, but CELEBe.2L took the lead by winning the first two sets. Imperial attempted a comeback by winning the third set after overtime, but CELEBe.2L prevailed in the fourth set as the team finished third. CELEBe.2L was the surprise fourth place finish in the last year’s event, and has now officially established itself as a top-tier team after finishing third in this year’s event.
The championship match of the CFS 2022 Grand Finals was a rematch between the Chinese teams from the previous year’s event. It was a nail-biter between All Gamers and Baisha Gaming. All Gamers had advanced to the finals without losing a single set, reminding the world of its championship-winning pedigree from the year before. On the other hand, Baisha Gaming clawed its way to the finals after a close match with multiple overtimes against Imperial of Brazil.
But when the finals began, the match went in a completely unexpected direction. Baisha Gaming replaced its members after finishing second place last year, and quickly secured the first two sets as the revamped team easily countered the strategies of All Gamers. All Gamers began a comeback in the third set and fought until the very last minute of the fourth set, but it was Baisha Gaming that prevailed in the end. Baisha Gaming finished second after losing 3-1 in the finals last year, but won this year’s event, emerging victorious against the same opponent from last year with a score of 3-1.
Immediately after the finals, Baisha Gaming stated, “We are happy to win with our team members and it is especially meaningful for us that we were able to overcome All Gamers, a team we couldn’t overcome last year”, and added, “We were able to win by improving on our tendency to lose focus in the second half.”
The news of Baisha Gaming’s victory brought fans to their feet, and the team was ranked in the top five searches in real-time across various platforms including Weibo (SNS in China) and Kuaishou (short-form streaming platform in China).
The total prize pool for the CFS 2022 Grand Finals was USD 1.34 million (approx. KRW 1.7 billion), which was approximately a 56% increase compared to the prize pool of last year’s event, and champion Baisha Gaming took home the prize of USD 500,000 (approx. KRW 653 million) along with the championship trophy.
